Beware of the Drift

“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” — Hebrews 2:1 (NKJV)

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is not a sudden rebellion against God, but a slow drift away from Him. A boat rarely drifts because of one large wave; it drifts because of many small currents. In the same way, believers can slowly drift through neglected prayer, inconsistent Bible reading, compromised obedience, or becoming too busy for God.

The writer of Hebrews warns us to pay careful attention to God’s truth so that we do not drift away. Spiritual drift is often subtle. We may still attend church, say the right things, and appear spiritually healthy, while our hearts gradually move farther from the Lord.

The good news is that Jesus is always calling us back. When we sense ourselves drifting, the answer is not guilt but repentance and renewed devotion. Spend time in His Word, return to prayer, and stay connected to other believers. The closer we stay to Christ, the less likely we are to be carried away by the currents of this world.

Today, take a spiritual inventory. Are you anchored firmly in Jesus, or have you begun to drift?

Lord Jesus, keep my heart close to You. Help me recognize any areas where I have begun to drift. Renew my passion for Your Word, strengthen my prayer life, and anchor me firmly in Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
