Following the Will of God
John 5:19 — “The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing…”
Jesus describes a life of complete alignment with the Father. He isn’t acting independently, chasing his own agenda, or trying to prove himself. Instead, he watches, listens, and follows. His power comes from relationship, not self-reliance.
That challenges the instinct to handle everything alone. It’s easy to rush decisions, react emotionally, or move forward just because you can. Jesus models something slower and deeper: paying attention to what God is doing first, then joining in.
This verse also shows trust. Jesus is confident that what the Father does is good, so he mirrors it. When you choose patience instead of impulse, kindness instead of retaliation, or honesty instead of convenience, you’re doing the same thing—reflecting God’s character in small, everyday moments.
Today, pause before acting. Ask: What would reflect God’s heart here? Following that direction, even in simple choices, is how your life begins to line up with His.
Lord, teach me to slow down and watch for Your hand at work. Help me to lay aside my own agenda and align my heart with Yours. May my actions today reflect Your love, Your truth, and Your will. Amen.
