Choosing What Truly Matters

“A man who has no focus for his life is like a ship without a rudder or a bird without wings. He is at the mercy of every wind that blows.” — Charles Spurgeon

In a world full of noise, options, and endless demands, we’re constantly pulled in many directions. Essentialism asks, “What truly matters?” Non-essentialism says, “Everything matters.” And when everything feels important, we end up exhausted, distracted, and spiritually dry.

Scripture gently calls us back to what is essential. In Luke 10:41–42, Jesus tells Martha: “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better…”

Martha was busy doing good things. But Mary chose the essential thing: sitting at Jesus’ feet. The difference wasn’t between good and bad. It was between good and necessary. Non-essentialism fills our lives with activity. Essentialism fills our lives with purpose.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Notice the order: first the Kingdom. Not alongside everything else. Not squeezed in when convenient. First. The Apostle Paul echoes this focus in Philippians 3:13–14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…” Paul lived with spiritual essentialism. One goal. One focus. One prize.

Reflection:

- What “many things” are crowding your heart today?

- Are you choosing what is better—or just what is urgent?

- If you removed the non-essentials, what would remain?

Prayer:

Lord, help me discern what truly matters. Give me courage to say no to distractions and yes to Your presence. Teach me to seek first Your Kingdom and to focus my life on what is eternal. Amen.
